Man in the middle attack (MitM)

Public wifi has caused a lot of harm to mobile/android phone 📱 user especially to those who have little or no knowledge of the effects and dangers of  public wifi.
One of the biggest dangers of public WiFi is the ability of hackers to position themselves between you and the connection point, so instead of talking directly with the hotspot, you end up sending your information to the hacker. Through this, the hacker is able to access and track every piece of information you send out — emails, phone numbers, credit card information, business data, etc. And once a hacker gets hold of this information, you've basically given him keys to the kingdom.

Malware distribution

Snooping and sniffing
Cybercriminals can buy special software kits and even devices to help assist them with eavesdropping on WiFi signals. This can allow the attacker to access everything that Youree doing online - from viewing webpages you have visited (including sensitive information you have filled out while visiting the webpage) to be able to capture your login credentials and even hijack your accounts.

Misleading hotspots
"Rouse access points" trick victims into connecting to what they think is a legit network because of the name which might sound reputable. For example, you're staying at “olive inn” and want to connect to the hotel's wifi, you may think you're selecting the correct one when you click “olive inn” but No. Instead, you've connected to a rogue hotspot set up by cybercriminals who now have access to viewing your sensitive information.

How to reduce the risk
  • Disable file sharing.
  • Only visit sites using HTTPS.
  • Log out of accounts when done using them.
  • use a VPN to make sure your public WiFi connections are in private.
  • Don't allow your wifi to auto-connect to networks.
  • Don't log onto a network that isn't password protected.
ln conclusion, connecting to free WiFi although it sounds harmless, is an incredibly dangerous situation regardless of what you do online. Always remember that anything you do on public WiFi is never secure. It is as “good as gone”
